Have you ever heard the term VUCA world? VUCA world is a term coined by Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus, two American business and leadership experts.
What is Vuca?
VUCA stands for Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity. In essence, the VUCA world means the world we live in today, where change is very fast, unpredictable, influenced by many factors that are difficult to control, and truth and reality become very subjective. The biggest influence of the shift in our world today is of course influenced by technology. Imagine, only about 20 years ago the internet became a part of our lives. Now, can we imagine our life without internet? Every inch of our lives intersect with the internet and technology. Should we then avoid the internet and technology? If we want to survive in today's world, we cannot avoid progress. We can only adapt. As Albert Einstein said, "The measure of intelligence is the ability to change."
The speed of technology and information not only affects our lifestyle or economic development out there, but also affects how education runs properly. Students will later face a more advanced, faster world, information is increasingly difficult to filter, competition is increasingly open. In addition, with the current pace of change, what teachers face today may be different from what students will face in the future. So both teachers and students will need to adapt in the VUCA era.
Ways to Prepare
Education for the VUCA Era
Although we also don't know
what the development of the world and technology will be like, there
are several things we can prepare so that students can survive and be
ready to face the VUCA era, including:
1. Start learning in accordance with the initial provisions of students.
Before students can learn many things, they have the knowledge and skills that have been learned before. They can operate computers, they can organize projects, they can write simple programs, and so on. The initial knowledge and skills must be clearly defined so that the learning map can be described clearly and directed.
2. Build a tough and curious character
Teachers will teach their students not to be afraid to face the obstacles they will experience. They will be trained and given the best opportunity to solve their own problems, and will not give up easily when faced with difficulties. This can be established by introducing students to natural and real case examples. For example, they were given practice problems with programming errors and asked to fix them. At other times, for example, they are given examples of business cases that need to be resolved with information systems.
3. Educate students to have adaptive and resilient characters
Adaptive character in students is crucial to build in the VUCA era which is full of changes. Therefore, teachers should not be afraid to try to go to new places, try new things, or introduce new experiences to students. Initially it was uncomfortable, both for students and teachers. However, constantly dealing with new experiences will make students learn to adapt easily to various situations. While the character of resilience is a person's ability to bounce back despite experiencing stressful situations.
In addition to the 3 things above, the attitude of the teacher will also greatly affect the students. For example, to teach students to be adaptive, teachers must also not be anti-new things. Starting from new learning media, new experiences, new people, to new technologies or applications. Uncomfortable? Of course. However, it is the obligation of teachers to stay acquainted with the world of students so that they will be better prepared to face changes in the future.
In addition, teachers can also make the class a safe learning tool for students. All their curiosity about new things can be discussed or even tested in class. Thus, students will confirm and clarify their knowledge and skills that may be obtained from outside in a more focused manner. In the end, uncertainty is part of the teacher's responsibility. We cannot control uncertainty, but we can control ourselves to be willing to learn new things while teaching students.
